My first trip to North America

This year saw my first trip to North America. I started in Seattle, then headed up to Alaska, before spending a couple of days in British Columbia.

The very comfortable MS Roald Amudsen, operated by HX Expeditions, was my home for a large part of this journey. We sailed from Nome out into the remote reaches of the Bering Sea, before travelling along the south of the Aleutian Peninsula and down the Inside Passage to Vancouver.

It's going to take me a while to process and sort all my photos, but I thought that I needed to post something - there will be more.

First though, I am starting with Unga Island. Wikipedia assures me that at the 2000 census the permanent population of the island was one. I didn't see any residents, although curiously a couple of cows live there, although they were too far away for me to create a decent image of them. In the past Unga was a centre, at various times, for gold mining , fishing, and the fur trade. Thankfully, all those industries are gone now. From 1968, Unga Island has been designated as a National Natural Landmark, and Unga is a ghost town.

While Unga is now uninhabited, its remains can be seen. Whilst the colours were gorgeous, I've opted for monochrome for this series.
